Classes clash in this gleefully hilarious slapstick detective story set in a tiny French coastal town of Slack Bay. Filled with burlesque caricatures brilliantly played by Fabrice Luchini, Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi and Juliette Binoche, this extravagant gem screened in competition at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival to a riotous audience reception.
Summer 1910 in Slack Bay, a mystery is brewing as one by one bourgeois holidaymakers are disappearing. The haughty Van Petegems and their extended family of twits have returned to their faux-Egyptian villa for the season, unaware that they are about to be thrust into a truly surreal scenario. The absurdly incompetent Inspector Machin and his shrewd assistant Malfoy fumble around searching for the culprits. While the murders continue unabated and unattributed, an unlikely love story unfolds between the young daughter Billie Van Petegem and Ma Loute, the eldest son of a family of roughneck fishermen with rather peculiar habits.
Delightfully extravagant costumes, enchanting seascapes and ever more extreme physical humour make Slack Bay an unforgettable and truly unique comedy best enjoyed with a twist.
