French Film Festival - The Midwife
7 April 2017
Alliance Francaise French Film Festival
Screen legends Catherine Frot (Marguerite, AF FFF16) and Catherine Deneuve (3 Hearts, AF FFF15) unite for award-winning writer, director Martin Provost’s hugely-anticipated new film. Fast-tracked to screen at the Festival directly from its World Premiere at the 2017 Berlinale and ahead of its French cinema release.
Claire (Frot) is a wonderfully gifted midwife. But over the years her sensitive ways and sense of pride and responsibility have started to clash with the efficiency-driven methods of modern hospitals. Closer to the end of her career than its beginning, she has started to question her skills and the life she has chosen. Out of the blue, she receives a call from Béatrice (Deneuve), the extravagant mistress of her deceased father, who wants to meet again, 30 years after disappearing without a trace. Despite being opposites in every way, the over-conscientious Claire and the free-spirited Béatrice learn to accept one another and, by revealing long-held secrets, try to make up for lost years.
With The Midwife, Provost (whose brilliant 2008’s Séraphine won seven César Awards) has created a deeply affecting tale of two singular, strong women, and a celebration of two of French cinema’s most beloved stars.
