They came in their thousands, shiploads of impoverished convict women and children. From 1803 to 1853, almost 13,000 convict women together with 2,000 children arrived in Van Diemen’s Land.

Shaping History follows Rowan Gillespie, internationally renowned Irish sculptor, who created four statues that are now located on the actual landing spot of the convicts in Van Diemen’s Land – Hunter Island. Now the forecourt of MACq 01 these striking statues were unveiled by the president of Ireland in 2017.
