The State Cinema is a Hobart icon that has entertained generations of Tasmanians for almost 100 years.

Purpose built in 1913 as a moving picture house, the State has evolved through the silent black and white era, and has witnessed the introduction of sound and colour. More recently we have embraced the exciting new medium of digital technology, and espresso coffee!

Restoration of the building’s heritage façade and the addition of seven new screens, and a café bar, has seen a renaissance of the State and a return to its former golden era. Screening a diverse program of local, Australian and international films; the State Cinema plays a major role in the social and cultural life of the Hobart community.

Relax in the fully licenced cafe bar and choose from a great selection of fine Tasmanian wines, beers or non-alcoholic beverages. Enjoy one of our legendary hot chocolates or coffee with a decadent slice of cake, or grab a quick savoury option before your film.
